Founded by DeHart and located near Lover’s Leap Overlook on Route 58 W in Patrick County, Va., DeHart Botanical Gardens is a rare nature preserve featuring a diverse population of plant and animal species as well as spectacular views that rival those seen from the famous overlook. DeHart Botanical Gardens This 172 acre natural area is on the north side of a mountain range near Fred Clifton Park in Patrick County, VA. Although a private preserve, it is open to the public by permission as a day use facility for hiking a loop trail from the top of the ridge to a waterfall at the base of the mountain. The first 21 acres were called "Greencroft Gardens" because Allen de Hart and his wife Flora lived in a colonial home name Greencroft in Albermarle County (near Charlottesville, Va). The Gardens' design and development began in 1963 and the lake was constructed in 1969. DeHart Botanical Gardens Trail [PRIVATE PROPERTY] is a 3 mile lightly trafficked loop trail located near Stuart, Virginia that features a waterfall and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking and nature trips and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash. The De Hart Botanical Gardens was a recent gift to Louisburg College by the Allen de Hart Family.
